≪ Okinawa traditional Eisa dance Experience≫

On July 26th, under the blazing summer sun of Nagoya, we held an Okinawan Eisa Dance Experience, where the powerful rhythm of drums filled the air!

We were honored to welcome members of the Ryukyu Koku Matsuri Daiko Tokai Chapter as our instructors, who shared with us the rich spirit and beauty of Eisa.

Eisa is a traditional Okinawan performing art, originally danced during the Obon season to welcome and send off ancestors’ spirits.
With drums, songs, and dynamic movements, it expresses gratitude and respect for one’s ancestors, a cultural symbol deeply rooted in Okinawa’s heritage.

Today, Eisa has evolved into a vibrant performance art that captivates audiences both in Japan and around the world.

During the workshop, participants first learned about the different types of drums, the meanings behind the dances, and the cultural background of Eisa, followed by a live performance right before their eyes!

The hall came alive with the resonating drumbeats and powerful, rhythmic movements, filling the space with excitement and energy.

Then came the hands-on Eisa experience time!

Participants practiced the basic steps, added drumming rhythms, and gradually mastered the coordinated moves.

Although many were trying Eisa for the first time, everyone danced with passion and joy, some even completing a full routine by the end!

It was truly inspiring to see so many smiling faces, sharing a sense of unity, accomplishment, and the warm spirit of Okinawa.

A heartfelt thank you to the Ryukyu Koku Matsuri Daiko Tokai Chapter and all who joined us for this!
