On March 25, 2022, we held a workshop in the “Experience Japanese Culture Firsthand” series titled “Sword Fighting,” or “殺陣” (Tate) in Japanese.
We were privileged to learn from Yanagiya Mikisuke and Gintaro.
What is a Katana (刀)?
A Katana is a traditional Japanese sword, known for its curved blade and two-handed grip. It’s the iconic weapon of the Samurai, typically measuring over 60 cm in length.
The instructors shared the hidden meanings behind each motion, weaving in fascinating stories about the historical context and behind-the-scenes insights into the craft.
To ensure safety, we practiced with wooden swords under the careful guidance of our instructors.
