On July 20th in 2024, we held our Tsumami Zaiku workshop, a traditional Japanese craft known for its delicate fabric folding, used in hair ornaments for apprentice geishas. Tsumami Zaiku, is a 200-year-old technique requiring only glue and tweezers—no needles or sewing machines needed.
This time, we embraced summer by creating morning glory flowers using the “Maru-tsumami” (round fold) technique.
Participants selected colors, folded and glued their chirimen (crepe) fabric, and added delicate details like stamen and petal veins, achieving a natural look with each bloom.
Our instructor, Ms. Aya Takeuchi, guided everyone in arranging petals, buds, and leaves to create their own unique morning glory pieces. Many beautiful and distinct flowers bloomed, showcasing each participant’s personality.
Tsumami Zaiku offers versatile creative potential, from hair ornaments to seasonal accessories and home decor. By changing colors and techniques, anyone can create unique pieces, making it a perfect choice for gifts and souvenirs.
Special thanks to Ms. Takeuchi and all participants for a rewarding day celebrating this traditional Japanese art!
