On May 25th in 2024, we held a workshop featuring Nagoya’s unique culture, “Garasumori” overglaze painting technique, led by Hitomi Sugiyama, a ceramic technician trained in Italy.
Participants, including some from overseas, enjoyed crafting rose motif decorative plates adorned with sparkling glass powder, creating a glamorous, three-dimensional effect.
Nagoya-Style Painting, known for techniques like “Dekomori” and “Garasumori,” applies colorful, raised designs on white porcelain. This workshop offered a hands-on experience with the “Icchin” tool, using seaweed-mixed paste to build intricate designs that were later sprinkled with glass powder.
Ms. Sugiyama’s clear, engaging guidance allowed even beginners to create authentic, beautiful pieces. Participants immersed themselves in the process, experimenting with gradients and colors to bring their roses to life, enhancing them with glass sparkle for a radiant finish.
As a cultural highlight of Nagoya, we hope to continue sharing this tradition and spread the beauty of Nagoya-Style Pottery worldwide. Special thanks to Ms. Sugiyama and all who joined us in celebrating this artistic heritage!
